Lake Como

Lago de Como lies like a surreal beauty in the embrace of the majestic Italian Alps and for every visitor, lives up to its reputation as a true jewel of Italy. Since Roman times this magical place has attracted the wealthy and aristocratic who sought escape from the bustle of city life and today we still fall under its spell. Many celebrities have acquired property along its extensive shoreline which abounds with magnificent villas and a multitude of elegant hotels.  Situated in Lombardy, Lake Como is the third largest in Italy and also one of the deepest in Europe. The perimeter of the “y” shaped body of water is dotted with dozens of small towns and villages and these are linked by a sophisticated ferry service.  There are many, many ways of appreciating Lake Como as the shoreline hotels, villages, islands and surrounding hills and mountains provide magnificent and varied vistas.  So striking is the scenery that it is referenced in literature from ancient Roman times to present day – indeed, in1818, Percy Bysshe Shelley was moved to write “This lake exceeds anything I ever beheld in beauty, with the exception of the arbutus islands of Killarney”.  Popular with tourists for its water sports, spas and wildlife, Lake Como has also featured in many movies.  With its mild climate, glorious architecture and famous formal gardens – many of which are accessible to the public, Lago di Como remains an essential destination in any serious Italian travel itinerary.
